  • Datawind yesterday released three tablets - the UbiSlate 7Cx, low-cost UbiSlate 3G7 and UbiSlate 9Ci for the Indian market. The UbiSlate 7Cx  is the commercial version of the Aakash 2 tablet and will retail at a price of only Rs. 3999 inclusive of all taxes.

The company has been releasing this tablet to those who booked Aakash earlier this year. We have one that landed with us just a day before its formal launch. Here is a short review of this budget tablet.

    Pros
    Cons
    ·         Educational content
    ·         Voice calling facility
    ·         Navigation app
    ·         32 GB expandable memory
    ·         Low cost
    ·         No camera
    ·         No Wi-Fi support

First of all it is important to understand what is expected from a tablet of Rs. 3999. We expect decent build quality, decent speed to finish tasks with no processor lags (read speed lag) and decent speed in connecting to the internet. If this is all one expects from a tablet, UbiSlate 7Cx is one to pick from a host of other low cost devices available in the market today.

The build quality looks fine. The back side of the tablet has Datawind’s logo and the device name printed on it. The finish is normal and the large fonts that has been used leave an impression that the tablet will be heavy. Turn it around and you will be delighted that it looks great from the front side. The tablet feels good in hand- the grip is fine. It  does not feel too light or too heavy.

Switch it on and the Android 4.o.4 Ice Cream sandwich operating system offers a good phone like interface. Anyone using an Android phone will immediately relate with the interface and start exploring the tablet.

Put in a sim card and you can connect to internet easily. We used the sim to connect to internet and the pages loaded with fairly decent speed. We don’t expect a lightning fast connection via the tablet, and we don’t get one. The tablet uses UbiSurfer browser that accelerates web pages by factors of 10xs to 30x, allowing for a web experience at speed that is much better than a normal browser.

The interface is smooth, switching from one app to another was easy. The 152 MB of RAM does not show any lag. For players who want to go for games, there is Sudoku-like word game and other games on the tablet. But you need to register your device in order to open the games and be able to play, for the first time when you log into a game.

The tablet is meant for education and Datawind plays no joke here. The tablet gets educational content for classes 8th to 12th for children who want to use the tablet as their primary education tablet. There is a pre-loaded dictionary app and games that focus on building the logic and reasoning of kids.

If you want to go searching to places that you have never visited before, take your kid along. Your sweetie will guide you about the roads via mapmyindia navigation app on  the tablet.

Want to listen to some songs? Put in a micro SDcard get going with your headphones. The internal memory of the tablet is 4 GB the maximum expandable storage via micro SDcard is 32 GB. You will get enough space to put a movie in the SDcard and take with you while travelling.

What is the most attractive feature of this tablet is that it has got voice calling support. You can use your sim card and make calls easily on the tablet. Most of the tablets that support voice calls via sim support do not come at this price and

The tablet however lacks a camera and Wi-Fi connectivity. In  low cost tablet, one usually gets a 0.3 megapixel or 1 megapixel camera, which is not a great addition to the tablet anyway. You can always put in Rs. 3000 and get a proper digital camera from the market, take pics and transfer via USB connector. For EDGE connectivity via sim, it will cost you about Rs. 100 to 120 for a month on an Internet package. This will not pinch hard on your pocket. Forget Wi-Fi, you can go on your sim-based tablet now.

    Verdict

At Rs. 3999 you get more than what you expect. The tablet is a perfect gift for your kid who is in school and is preparing for exams.
